My cousin Kaitlyn is working on a project for her Language Arts class. They just read a book called Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown. The book is about a young boy named Stanley who is accidentally squished “as flat as a pancake” when a bulletin board falls in him. Stanley is very flat but okay. Stanley discovers some advantages to being flat. He can slide under doors, go down into sidewalk grates and even fold himself up small enough to fit into an envelope and be mailed to California for an exciting vacation.
After reading the story about Stanley Kaitlyn’s class made their own Stanleys. They are mailing them out to friends and family so that they can learn about different places.
Stanley got to learn a lot about Killeen. He learned that Killeen was founded in 1882 by the Santa Fe Railroad and was originally a shipping station for cotton and cattle. Killeen has a population of 112,000 people and has 31 parks, two public swimming pools, 32 lighted tennis courts, a golf course and two lakes (Stillhouse Hollow and Lake Belton) with in a 20 minute drive. Killeen is also home to Ft. Hood which is the largest United States Military Installation in the world.
In the picture you see Stanley on post at Ft. Hood. During his stay he visited the 4th Infantry Division’s museum where he got to see all kids of cool things. He saw military vehicles ranging from jeeps to helicopters and even tanks. He was so excited to see the tanks that he climbed on top of one and asked to have his picture taken.
Stanley is now on his way home back to Kaitlyn so he can go back to her class and tell them all of the fun things that he learned and got to see in Killeen.
